How Busy Moms Can Boost Their Family’s Holistic Health

“I don’t think we’ve ever been in such a stressful time in our lifetimes,” Dr. Claudy-Ann Keasberry said as we began our interview.

Her honesty is palpable. It’s been nearly a year since life forever shifted, with the global covid pandemic. You know the drill. Us parents were thrust into a new normal, often leaving unfilled gaps—mentally, emotionally, and physically. We’re juggling work, financials, homeschooling, cooking, cleaning, maintaining our homes, supporting our children, ourselves and our sanity, all with limited support. We know that health and wellness should be prioritized, yet in this climate it’s easy to let it slip through the cracks.

Want to reinvigorate your family’s health?

Dr. Keasberry, better known as Dr. K, has some sage advice. She is a well-respected Alternative Healthcare Specialist, Chiropractor, and Nutrition Response Testing Practicioner, based in Glendale, California. A friend introduced me to her when my children were working through eczema and food allergies. She went further than any other doctor and helped them heal, naturally. Dr. K also opened my eyes to a new way of approaching medicine, by looking at the whole person and showing us just how powerful plants can be. She helped my family, and I hope that she can help yours.

Q&A with Dr. K

What’s your advice for parents who are struggling to prioritize their health and wellness during this time?

The moment you get caught up in the hype, that’s when you lose control, then your imagination can run away with you. Fear is pretty much the most lowest vibration you can have. Your thoughts are controlled when you’re in fear. Maybe it’s not really that that bad, but the person is really freaking out because they can’t handle the physiological stress of it...The first thing I do is make sure I get the person’s emotional state in check. I bring up points to bring them down to earth.

What does holistic care, (when using Nutrition Response Testing) look like to you?

What’s the root cause? I check your body from head to toe, see what shows up as an issue. It’s a layering system, so what shows up in the first layer, for example your thyroid may show up, but then your liver doesn’t. The next time you come back to me, your thyroid is fine, and now your liver is showing up. It’s like peeling the layers of an onion. That’s an approach that I feel all practitioners should take. Peel the layers of an onion, find out until you get to that bottom layer, then most of the issues should be solved!

Dr. K’s 4 strategies to help busy moms redesign their family lifestyles on a natural level includes:

  1. Educate yourself from good sources: Research reliable holistic experts, brands, and resources. Check out their books and websites.

  2. Buy and prepare fresh food: It’s so easy to get prepackaged stuff. And I understand it, no judgement. But (buying fresh food) is so crucial because they are growing beings,” she explains. Even if it’s pricey, Dr. K suggests buying organic fruit and veggies. In the U.S. she says that current agricultural standards only require certified organic foods to be 60% organic. “So imagine if you’re not getting organic!”

  3. Get a good multivitamin for your family: “You can make up for some of the deficiencies in the food with some good vitamins. I carry a whole bunch of different things. A lot of the good companies make child specific general vitamins. Make sure you know what minerals they should be getting, which vitamins they should be getting.” And while gummy vitamins are fun, Dr. K advises skipping them unless they’re low in sugar and high in substance.

  4. Limit your family’s exposure to EMFs: Try to limit screen-time, cellphone, microwave and appliance use, when possible. Although research is still unfolding when it comes the dangers of lower level radiation, the World Health Organization says that EMFs are “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” Dr. K adds, “I see parents giving the kids the videos constantly. I’m not going to say don’t do it ever, but don’t do it all of the time. You are there to regulate your child. You’re NOT there to give them everything they want, even if it’s bad for them because you can’t do what you need to do...My intuitive feeling is that it’s not good for us.”

“Make sure you get a lot of Vitamin C, Zinc and D3, that goes for most people. In the winter months, we need our Vitamin D a little more…”

~Dr. K

What are the best supplements for families to take to stay healthy during the winter?

It’s such an individualistic situation. I don’t fall for any vegetarian, vegan or carnivore diets. It’s different for everybody. Make sure you get a lot of Vitamin C, Zinc and D3, that goes for most people. In the winter months, we need our Vitamin D a little more; whether you’re getting it from your food or another source, like the sun.

I love that you believe in intuitive eating—how freeing!

Together the entire world could be so much better than it is now, in all aspects really. I know what makes me feel good. So I just stay away from the no feel goods and keep eating the feel goods!

I know that generalizations are hard. You mentioned that gluten has the tendency one of those “no feel good foods,” for many people. Why?

In America, gluten is pretty much poison for everyone across the board. Some people handle it on a higher level, and don’t understand that it’s affecting them. But literally, this (pesticide) glyphosate (found in wheat, and other foods) stays in your brain. This is the kind of stuff that people have no clue. I didn’t know that my brain was full of glyphosate until I tested myself…But then you can go to Italy and eat the pasta and eat the bread and your body doesn’t have a reaction. It’s because of the way we grow our stuff. Genetic modification—our farmers farm completely wrong for healthy eating and nutrient rich food.

One way you work with your clients, is by helping them flush out the rough stuff in our systems by detoxing. How do you do that?

I work with vitamins, herbs, homeopathic stuff, anything healthy I work with.

“It sounds a little woo-woo, and people need to be prepared to think outside of the box. But the proof is in the pudding.”

-Dr. K

Many of your clients are children with eczema and asthma. You mentioned that as a holistic doctor, parents often come to you as the last resort.

I had a 2-year-old girl brought to me this past year, at the beginning of covid. She had asthma. It was really dire. They did not believe in energy work, but they were so desperate…They did what I said. In a month, she was better already. In 2 months, they weren’t even coming back for follow-up visits because she was so good! I’ve got a million cases like that.

It sounds a little woo-woo, and people need to be prepared to think outside of the box. But the proof is in the pudding. People have to stay open-minded, they have to know that energy (work) exists, because we’re not taught that in school...The average Joe, I must say, they’re skeptical. Then when their poor baby who has had eczema his or her whole life and—all of a sudden they don’t—BOOM. There you go.

The sooner I can solve a problem in a young body, the better they’re going to be in life. Eczema is actually the most common (reason) why parents are bringing their kids to me. A lot of children are being born and their skin’s acting up, right away. A lot times doctors will tell you to put a salve on it. The truth is that you have to go inside and see what’s acting up. It’s not normal for things to go through the skin, so that means something’s wrong. When the detox pathways aren’t working, nothing can get out the proper channels. So all of the toxins that your body normally produces in just everyday use; eating food, processing the food, and getting rid of your toxins, all of sudden those toxins are staying in the body and floating around, getting into the brain. Finally not having anywhere to go, they push out the skin. That’s basically what eczema, psoriasis, cradle cap are all about.
